Recognised for its contribution in developing Indigenous Technology in nano-materials and successfully commercialising it for the nation

Mumbai, NFAPost: Tata Chemicals, a leading sustainable and science-led chemistry solutions company, has been bestowed with one of the most prestigious awards in science – ICC Acharya P.C Ray Award for Development of Indigenous Technology for the advancements it has made in nanomaterials especially, Nano-zinc oxide (nZno). This accolade is a science excellence milestone for the Company.

Nano zinc oxide is a product of Tata Chemicals’ developed with a vision to serve the society through science and offer innovative, science-led differentiated products and solutions not just to the customers but the nation, at large.

At the virtual felicitation ceremony organised by Indian Chemical Council – the apex national body representing the Chemical Industry in India, Dr. Richard Lobo, Head Innovation and CQH, Tata Chemicals spoke on the journey of developing the nano-technology, the commercialization and re-directing of the portfolio recently towards the use of nZnO as an ingredient in face masks and PPE’s  in the fight against covid-19.

Multi-disciplinary science

Commenting on this remarkable achievement, Tata Chemicals Head Innovation and CQH Dr. Richard Lobo said born out of a mission to harness the potential of chemistry and serving society through Science, the company has leveraged multi-disciplinary sciences, with customer centricity, to develop solutions unmatched in Chemistry Excellence.

Ray Award, instituted in the memory of a doyen and visionary, who is regarded as the Father of Chemical Sciences in India and founder of the country’s first pharmaceutical company. This recognition emboldens us further to continue delivering science-led differentiation on our mission of Serving Society through Science,” said Tata Chemicals Head Innovation and CQH Dr. Richard Lobo.

Tata Chemicals’ nZnO has been developed using nanotechnology innovations and a patented eco-friendly & sustainable process.

Cosmetic application

The product is free of harmful heavy metal compounds, has antiviral & antimicrobial and UV blocking properties giving required performance at lower dosages which makes it a perfect example of excellent efficiency packed in nano units.

Because of its unique properties, Tata Chemicals nZnO is used for industrial, textile and cosmetic applications, including cosmetics, paints/coatings, adhesives, plastics and baby care products.

The ICC Acharya P.C Ray Award for Development of Indigenous Technology is a category at the annual National Awards by Indian Chemical Council, the apex organisation of chemical manufacturers in India.

Nominations received are scrutinised by a team consisting of experts from the industry, academia, national laboratories, etc. This award category recognises the technological advancements and contributions made by organisations in the field of science.
