Bengaluru, NFAPost: AWS is working hard to keep its leadership position, and CEO Andy Jassy states that the operational performance and the availability in AWS is many times higher than the next-biggest provider.

AWS CEO Andy Jassy made this statement during the recently concluded AWS Summit Online 2020, the first virtual summit, a free, online conference designed to educate and inform customers about AWS services. 

“The operational performance and the availability in AWS is many, many times higher than the next-biggest provider. It’s a pretty substantial difference,” he said. 

AWS CEO Andy Jassy also brought attention on the cost structure. “This is a reason why we’re the only ones that really break out our financials cleanly in the infrastructure in the cloud-computing space. It’s really, really hard to run these high-volume, relatively low-margin businesses at scale and operate the right way,” he said. 

The company CEO also said that the people have really taken to heart the notion that they are in an unprecedented era of mass data. 

“We’ve never seen anything like this, and you can see customers really embracing those capabilities and design patterns to start dealing with that. And so if you look at Redshift, our data-warehouse service, we announced these RA instances that allow people to scale their compute and storage separately. And people have just flocked to those since we’ve launched them,” he said. 

Besides Aqua architecture and managed Elasticsearch service, customers are excited about the company’s UltraWarm storage solution, relational database engine Aurora and Amazon SageMaker.

The AWS CEO also made it very clear that during this Covid-19 pandemic AWS is trying to helping people, and companies, and organisations function as they can’t be operating normally at the workplace. 

He said lots of companies make mistakes when they take a decision to be on-premises or in the cloud.  The arguments are that they can operate infrastructure less expensively than it can be done in the cloud, or that they have enough services to allow their organizations to move as quickly as people can in the cloud.

“We’ve done many thousands of these comparisons, as you know, over the years. I don’t think I’ve yet seen a company that can move at the cost structure and at the pace of changing their customer experience that you can in AWS and in the cloud,” said AWS CEO Andy Jassy.

He pointed out that there are a lot of reasons why sometimes people are resistant to move to cloud. “I think oftentimes you’re really proud of the infrastructure you’ve already built. And sometimes you take the notion that if it ain’t broke, why fix it? And I think sometimes people don’t know what it means for their own job or their own scope. And it’s learning new skills,” he said. 

Andy Jassy said he thinks it’s hard sometimes for companies to make that change. “The problem with that is that while all of your competitors have really gone all the way in and are moving much more quickly and much more cost-effectively, you’re still kind of in this experimental phase where you haven’t transformed your company, and you’re operating with lots of different environments,” he said.

Too many  options will land organisation with a very wasteful and ineffective cost structure and  it will create logistical challenges. Also, it is very difficult to run high-volume and relatively low-margin businesses on-premises.

On the company’s other focus areas, he said it is interesting to look at how manufacturing and industrial organizations are changing as their assets that function in their facilities and their factories collect really important data.

“And today they’re largely sending that data, through AWS IoT, to the cloud to store it and to analyze it. But they also have certain activities where they don’t want to take the round-trip latency to the cloud. They want to actually operate on that activity and analyse it in real-time on the device itself.” 

He said that is why the company has come up with a service called AWS IoT Greengrass that effectively has a SDK inside of a device with compute and storage in there but with the ability for developers to set, as triggers, which pieces they want to send to the cloud and which pieces they want to operate right on the device themselves.
